The best way to keep your ant pests under control is to start a home pest control program, says Rick Weinberg, a pest control specialist with the National Ant Pest Control Center in Westport, Connecticut.

You can get the information at www.antpestcontrol.org or call the National Pest Center at 1-888-418-2341.

Start by adding a pest management program in your yard, on your property, or in your neighbor’s yard, he says.

“A lot of people think that’s just a ‘nice-to-have’ that they can just get rid of, but it’s actually very effective,” Weinberg says.

Start a system that includes pest control programs that include everything from sprinklers and mulch to fencing and sprinklers, as well as insecticides and herbicides.

“Once you have a system, you’re not just going to have an individual house, but you’re going to be able to have a lot of different kinds of units that are going to serve different needs,” he says, “so you can have a large area that’s going to need pest control and a small area that needs more pest control.”

You also can add additional control to your existing system, Weinberg adds.

“If you have your pest control unit up in the house, you can take it down if you have an electrical problem,” he explains.

“So if you need a sprinkler, you put it down.

If you need insecticide, you spray it on your plants, or if you want herbicide, that’s what you do.”
